Halloween celebration. Halloween in Carpathian style

Halloween is a holiday that is celebrated every year on October 31st, and Halloween 2022 will be on Monday, October 31st. The tradition comes from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and dress up in costumes to ward off ghosts. Eventually, Halloween became a day of active activities such as entertainment, lantern carving, holiday gatherings, dressing up in costumes and eating treats.

All Saints’ Day lasts one night. In ancient times, people believed that on October 31, all evil forces wake up and, turning into animals, wander among us. Moreover, there is a version that spirits often come to their former homes to check how the new owners are behaving.
On Halloween, it is customary to make a scary pika from a pumpkin and leave it on the doorstep or windowsill of the house. On the night of October 31, children change into scary costumes and knock on neighbors’ apartments, saying: “Wallet or life!” or “Candy or death!”. This means that if they are not given sweets or money, trouble awaits the person who refused.
A vegetable product made by many people who celebrate Halloween is called a jack-o-lantern. And the most important attribute of the holiday has its own history.

In addition to the symbol of the holiday – a pumpkin with a candle, its important attribute is “terrible” costumes. They imitate evil power and are therefore performed in red and black colors, often in the form of hoodies with a hood. The most popular images are vampires, werewolves, witches.
Children also dress up as movie characters or famous personalities and walk around the yards, “scaring” the owners and demanding sweets.
On Halloween, it is customary to prepare sweet dishes from apples: caramel, syrup, marshmallows, candies in the form of corn. Traditionally, barmbrek bread is prepared – an Irish pastry with raisins and grapes. Peas, chips, coins, a ring and cloth are added to the dough. The one to whom which item got into the bread predicts the future. A pea says that you shouldn’t wait for a quick wedding, a cod predicts troubles in the family, a coin – to prosperity, a ring says about a quick wedding, and a cloth – predicts lack of money.
