New Year is a special holiday for millions of people, because this event is associated for many with changes, new beginnings and achievements, new opportunities. History, traditions of celebrating the New Year in Ukraine.
New Year’s celebration in the Carpathians. Traditions and ceremonies New Year’s Eve is celebrated from December 31 to January 1 in the Gregorian style, however, it was not always like that. Our ancestors celebrated this event on the night of January 13-14, hence the tradition of celebrating the Old New Year has been preserved. The holiday itself had a special, sacred meaning and was closely connected with nature, future harvests and profit in the next, new year. A tradition that had special honor was sowing.
The children went from house to house and “sowed” the houses of the owners with rye and wheat, thereby wishing for abundance, and the grateful owners treated the children with nuts and apples, which they took from a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. The Christmas tree itself symbolized an evergreen tree that is not afraid of the cold and symbolizes the future flowering of nature. Another good tradition was the “goat”, or Malanka. It was arranged by guests who came to the house to the owners. It also didn’t matter who entered the house first, preference was given to men, less often to children.
A magical tradition that has survived to this day is to make wishes that must come true in the new year.
